Charred Vase I

Made just outside London for Stellar Editions, these stunning ceramic vessels are handbuilt in clay using the coiling method. Once the form is created the vessel is smoothed and then repeatedly burnished with the back of a spoon to achieve an almost glossy finish.  After the initial low bisque firing the pots are smoke or "sagger" fired with sawdust and other combustible material - the materials burning away to create unique patterns and markings.  A coat of soft beeswax enhances the surface with a soft sheen.

 

The vessel is a truly remarkable piece - sitting well on a plinth, shelf or console.  The unique charred markings create such visual interest combined with the soft waxy finish.
