Carl Fox
We met Carl Fox back in October 2025 at Decorex. Carl was one of the outstanding artisans selected to showcase his skills and creativity as part of the Making Spaces feature. Liz, our founder, has always been attracted to marquetry and for the last couple of years, had this idea of a wall-mounted console featuring a snake. We immediately warmed to Carl and within a few days, we started working on the piece. This was our first commission with Carl and we are hoping for many more.
Carl’s journey is fascinating. He was always drawn to craft but entering the job market in the 1990s, the most creative profession available to him was hairdressing! All his spare time was spent learning a variety of crafts from upholstery and textile work to furniture restoration. When the pandemic locked us all in and hairdressing salons had to close their doors, Carl seized the opportunity and taught himself marquetry, combining heritage techniques with contemporary technology.
In a world where craft was once again recognised, valued, and celebrated, Carl never looked back. In 2022, he set up his own studio and in 2023, was awarded a scholarship from the Worshipful Company of Carpenters through the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust. Carl’s work has been showcased at prestigious events such as Homo Faber in Venice and the Collect Art Fair and is held in collections both in the UK and internationally.
